Week of April 7th Practices: Justice – 3 of Air – Elder of Fire

For Seekers – Practices for Soul & Spirit – Weekly Practice

Each week I pull cards to inspire contemplative / personal development practice for readers of the blog as a group using the Gaian Tarot.  (If you want to read more about the process, check out Sacred Practices of the Gaian Tarot: The 3 P’s).You are invited to use the cards below to inspire your practice, and, if you like, share your reflections in the comments.  You are also free to draw your own cards.

Gaian 11-justicePATH:  Use Pile 1 / Majors and Aces to pull a card for the question:  What sacred path would best serve the group this week? JUSTICE  invites us to walk this week on pathways of  …

  •  Living in balance with that which is beyond us:  our families, communities, countries, the whole planet.
  • Following ethical principles that support personal and communal good and balanced living.
  • Paying attention to how the actions you take and choices you make impact the human, more-than-human, and global communities.

gaian three-airPRACTICE:  Use Pile 2 / numbered cards for this question:  What contemplative practice will best serve us to move along this pathway this week?  THREE OF AIR  invites us to practices such as …

  •  Paying attention to difficult thoughts and the feelings that arise from them rather than trying to ignore them.  It can be “enough” of a practice just to let these thoughts surface.
  • Writing as a release for personal and planetary pain.  Get out a notebook and paper and freewrite.   Just do it for yourself.
  • Write something about a cause you believe in deeply and share it in some way (Facebook post, blog, Letter to the Editor of your local paper) and dedicate this work to reducing suffering in the world.

Gaian elder-firePOSTURE:  Use Pile 3 / People cards for a question such as:  What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful to me in undertaking this practice?  ELDER OF FIRE  invites you to follow your path and practices with attitudes of ….

  • Fierce attention.
  • Letting yourself be carried by energy rather than trying to shape/control it.
  • Being open to the guidance of the Otherworld(s) and those who have passed out of this one.

OVERALL MUSINGS: The deepest communal message here may be to let ourselves feel the pain, the worry, the grief for what is happening to the earth: war, extinction of species, climate chaos.   Joanna Macy has long been a leader in paying attention to what arises in us before these huge forces and her Work That Reconnects has ideas and resources to support this difficult work.  She speaks eloquently of why this work is needed, including:  “Our experience of moral pain for our world springs from our interconnectedness with all beings, from which also arise our powers to act on their behalf.  When we deny or repress our pain for the world, or view it as a private pathology, our power to take part in the healing of our world is diminished.  Our capacity to respond to our own and others’ suffering can be unblocked.”

The first step is feeling and acknowledging the suffering.  This can lead us to helpful action, but we often rush in to that action place (particularly a U.S thing?).  Perhaps the Elder of Fire can guide us to the most necessary action.  Perhaps she can introduce us to the 1 in 3 amphibian species that are extinct, the endangered Sea Turtle seen in the Gaian Justice card, those who died in the Ninth Ward when the levees broke in Katrina.  If we listened to them and their wisdom might we find just what is needed now for the good of the Whole?
