Each week I pull Tarot cards to inspire practice that cultivates soul wisdom for readers of the blog as a group using the Gaian Tarot. (If you want to read more about the process, check out Sacred Practices of the Gaian Tarot: The 3 P’s).You are invited to use the cards below to inspire your practice, and, if you like, share your reflections in the comments. You are also free to draw your own cards and share them in the comments.
PATH: Use Pile 1 / Majors and Aces to pull a card for the question: What path would it best serve us to walk this week?THE CANOE invites us to walk this week on pathways of …
- Having the focus and determination to begin a new phase of life’s journey.
- Aligning yourself with the helpful energy that surrounds you (what are the eagles, orcas and salmons that are appearing in your life to remind you of the guidance and support of the earth?).
- Cooperating with both your conscious awareness and your unconscious urgings, using them like alternating paddles to move yourself forward in the flow of life.
- Dedicating yourself to your goal, your quest, the challenge before you.

- Candle gazing. It’s as easy as it sounds—just gaze at the flame of a candle. You might do this practice with a particular intention such as expanding or clarifying your vision around work, service, or love, for example.
- Dedicate the cultivation of your individual joy to creating more collective joy in some way.
- Spend some times looking your deep desires in the eyes. What are they really? Do you really want to dance with them?
- Work with a “buddy” to ensure you do your practice: walk together in nature, silently; write out your gratitudes daily or weekly and mail them to each other; find the deity or ancestor who would best guide you in the challenges you currently face and develop a relationship with them.
POSTURE: Use Pile 3 / People cards for a question such as: What attitudes and behaviors will be most helpful to undertake this practice and walk with path? ELDER OF WATER invites you to follow your path and practices with attitudes of …
- Allowing ourselves to pause and pay attention to what is arriving in our lives – especially our emotions – at any given time.
- Seeing with awe the things that you have seen a thousand times before.
- Being attentive to the magic and beauty that comes from the natural world (especially the ocean as it follows the moon) or from dreams.
- Friendship with and compassion for all the emotions that well up in you and in others as you travel your days.
OVERALL MUSINGS: A second week in the Canoe with a practice of fire! Last week we worked with determination to bring our projects and longings into form. This week the invitation is to step back from last week’s work and contemplate what has emerged. How has it advanced your visions? Will you continue this dance or begin another? Are we truly moving toward our highest dreams? Does the work shine with love? Dare to look and see!
