Reading of the Moonth: The Soul Shaping Path of The Star

For Seekers – Moonthly Renewal – Practices for Soul & Spirit

The arrival of the new moon stamps the moonth with an initiating energy that shifts and develops through a cycle of growth, fullness, and descent.  Each moonth I look to the Tarot’s astrological correspondences for the new moon to find 3 cards (a Major, a numbered Minor, and a court/people card) to guide musings on soul tending as well as creation of a moonthly reading. The reading can be done any time, but ideally between the new and full moons. Revisit the cards you pull periodically up until the next lunation to gain new insight as the light changes. This new moon arrives January 24th at 4:42pm ET. The full moon arrives overnight February 8th – 9th. Dark moon days are February 21 and 22. This moonth’s reading is inspired by The Gaian Tarot.

Path: The Star

The Star emerges after our encounter last moonth with The Devil to offer the light of hope. The Star turns our attention to the generativity of the cosmos that is the constant flow of the Life-Death-Life cycle. Life renews itself out of the death of an exploding star and new worlds are created. The earth and our own bones are made from such star dust. Even when clouds cover the sky, we carry star fragments inside ourselves. The gifts of this flow are freely given to all. There are no fees for, or borders around, this light, and the darker the night, the better the view of the stars. When we center ourselves in gratitude for these gifts, we tap into the energy, beauty, and hopefulness that comes from The Star.

CULTIVATION: What to cultivate to accept this moonth’s invitation of hope?

Passage and Practice: Five of Air

We will see conflict this moonth. Aggression and attack may be focused on taking over the “nest,” which we might see as the foundation, home or institutions of our ideals. And in response there will be defense of that which is most important.

The choice for each one of us becomes how to respond to the conflict while still walking the path of The Star. As well as giving us a view into the happenings of the moonth, the Gaian Five of Air shows us options for action. The eagles at their nest are defending and speaking up for what is most important. The circling eagle is rising above to gain a wider perspective. Even the eagles that would seem to be attacking could be seen as asserting a right to enter the nest. Which eagle draws your attention? This one might be a reflection of best practice and action for you this moonth.

ACTION: How can I best act for the good of the whole in times of conflict?

Posture: Elder of Air

Amidst the conflict, those who tend the Star are called to stand as calm presences offering messages of peace and perspective to their community. Do not be thrown from your center by conflict in the outer world nor forget the wisdom you have gained so far in walking your unique soul path. Making an ally of Luna Moth, as Gaian Tarot creator Joanna Powell Colbert points out, connects us to the messages of the ancestors so no matter our physical age we can connect to very old wisdom. Centered in such wisdom, we can be calm, but we will not be silent.

VOICE: How can I be a voice of peace?
