Full Moon Revelations: Welcome the strange on the moon of the Moon

For Seekers – Moonthly Renewal – Practices for Soul & Spirit – Sanctuary

The height of this moonth’s cycle comes with a full moon arriving on September 10th (exact at 5:59am ET), and offers a revelation about how the lunar energies initiated on the August 27th new moon are developing. That new moon, guided by its association with the Hermit and the Knight of Pentacles, invited us to embrace, blend, and express the many aspects of our parts within to match the needs of the moment. Out of the full moon revelation about this developing energy, we are issued an invitation to return a gift to the world in the final weeks of the lunar cycle.

The astro-Tarot correspondences align the full moon moment with the Tarot’s Moon card. We are in the moon of the Moon!

Over their centuries of existence, each Tarot card has gathered up a whole range of meanings. Sometimes these meanings conflict with each other as ideas and mores of one generation are layered on to another. You can see this laying in contemporary Tarot books’ description of The Moon. The card is both a positive harbinger of increased intuition inspired by connection to the Divine Femine and also a warning about delusions, primal fear, and madness. There is an umbrella I would place over all these meanings: The Moon is about the strange.

Today the mainstream culture would find it strange to make decisions based on intuition flowing from an invisible Source. The center of this culture has become estranged from this sense. But at the edges, intuition is encouraged. And God Herself invoked.

But as the institutions and norms at the center of culture fall apart, people are seeking further afield and finding themselves at the edges. You can see this in the growing popularity of not just Tarot but many other once marginal – yes, strange! – practices and ideas.

The edge is bringing the strange more and more into the center.

At the new moon we looked at how young activists are being the wise Hermits and shining their lights on problems that have been swept into the dark for too long. It’s a strange flip of the script, but now we older folks are called to action – to once again be questing Knights – to change the institutions and policies that we have influence over. I was talking to a young climate activist the other day who told me: “Yes, it is positive that young people are acting, but we are not your silver bullet. We can’t be the safety net.”

We live in strange times, and this full moon invites us to move into the strangeness rather than away from it. To let it spark something that because it is strange is creative, generative, transformative.

To encourage strange revelation, you might do one or combine all of these practices:

  • Take out any reading or your reflections from the new moon and look at them in a new light. How does your understanding of the cards shift now that time has passed and light has shifted? (If you haven’t done a reading yet, no problem, just do it now under the light of the full moon. You can try the one included in the new moon post.)
  • Bring out cards from your Tarot deck and connect them to your new moon reading / reflections. You might include The Hermit and The Moon or other cards that have inspired since the new moon. You could place/imagine these cards on either side of your reading or above and below, and then look at how they add meaning into the story your original cards offered you.
  • Moon bathe by sitting or lying under a window or outside on the ground. Let go of your thoughts and soak in the light.
  • Reflect on questions such as: What is the strangest possibility offered by these cards? How could I work with that possibility? What is my intuition guiding me to do? You can, of course, pull card for any of these questions. You may want to engage in Visio Divina to find the layers of wisdom within the cards.

When you are done, remember to offer gratitude for what you have received. Consider what gift you now want to return to the world. Pulling a card for guidance on the gift is always a fine thing to do. In the coming weeks and before the moon returns to dark around September 23rd offer your gift to the world.

May the rest of this moonth be inspired for you. I am about to be inspired by Greece on trip with fellow Tarot lovers where we will seek the wisdom in the landscape, symbols and myth at Delphi, Eleusis, and on Crete. I’m not the best at social media, but will endeavor to post pictures on my Instagram and Facebook profiles. I will set up an end of September new moon enews for you all to go out while I am away and with the help of tech gods it will arrive in your in-box, but, FYI, I will be off line as much as possible and not doing any sessions or readings through October 2nd.
